Easter in Attica

MEGARA

Here on Easter Tuesday the "Trata" dance is performed. According to tradition, during the Turkish rule the local people one day asked permission from the Pasha to build a small church. The Pasha gave his permission, but on condition that they would build the church in one day. Otherwise they would be executed.
The inhabitants managed to complete the church by midday, and dedicated it to St John "Galileos". Since then, at that very spot, after church service, celebrations take place with the participation of the town's traditional dance groups and musicians, and the "Trata" dance is performed.

HYDRA

On Hydra, a unique event takes place on Good Friday : the epitaphios procession of the Kamini district goes right into the sea. There the epitaphios service is held in an atmosphere of devotion. The processions of four parishes then meet at the main harbour, lending the occasion a colour all of its own. At the moment of the Resurrection, innumerable firecrackers turn the night into day.
